EMPATHY ARTS ARTIST SCANTANA | The Man With The Most Grammar

Scantana, ‘The Man with The Most Grammar’, is a rapper, actor, songwriter, screenplay writer, performance artist and motivational speaker.

Born Kibwe Lawrence in the troubled community dubbed “Tel Aviv”, in the inner city of Kingston, Jamaica, he travelled to the South Bronx where he spent most of his adolescent years

As a teenager Scantana was saturated by hip-hop influences, developing a fascination with words; adopting The Roget's Pocket Dictionary as his best friend. Writing his first rap song at the age of 12, he quickly earned the respect of his peers due to his lyrical prowess. His respect and popularity grew throughout his high school years as he scored performances with Hip-Hop/RnB acts Foxy Brown, Tyrese, MA$E and SWV.

Growing up in a household where drug use and dealing went hand in hand, Scantana was predisposed to criminality which he would later fall victim to.

On completion of his 5 year prison term, Scantana was deported to his native Jamaica where he struggled to find his place. Despite the challenges, Scantana never wavered in the belief that his talent would create a better situation and a more suitable way of life.

In 2004, Scantana was introduced to reggae giants Sly and Robbie and the Taxi Gang, and began to develop his craft as a Jamaican Rapper. He learned the importance of melody, how to record and engineer and gained a better understanding of the culture that would help to shape his unique style.

A few years later Scantana entered The Tastee Talent Trail advancing to the finals and landing an opportunity to attend a performing arts school. Working as a professional barber in the heart of the community Scantana missed out on attending the school due to injuries sustained during a random knife attack. Despite this setback, in 2012 he attended college and gained an Associate’s Degree in Performing Arts in 2012.

In 2010, he released his debut album entitled Sly and Robbie and Scantana "The Best Supporting Acts" featuring Third World, Anthony Red Roze, Serani, Bugle, Demarco and the late Jimmy Riley.

Working on several projects with Sony Japan, he interpreted songs from Japanese to English, performing with group UNITZz.

Scantana has written songs with and for many of Jamaica's premiere acts such as Elephant Man, Bunny Ruggs, Danielle DI Issacs and Ghost.

2016 saw Scantana’s track #BLACKLIVESMATTER go viral, exceeding over 100,000 views in 24 hours.

As an actor he made his debut in the no.1 hit Netflix Series “Top Boy” (2019) as Lester and in the same year appeared in Sprinter (Netflix).

In 2021, Scantana signed to Empathy Arts SA publishing arm and is currently working on new material and a one man show.
